Malting news World: At least four leading malt exporting countries to see their shipments restricted this year - analysts

The world malt market is in disorder. At least four countries will be affected and their exports restricted, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their early August report.

According to the analysts, Russia, which exported 176 thousand tonnes of malt and Ukraine which shipped 75 thousand tonnes in 2020 will be restricted by the war this year. China (with 394 thousand tonnes exported in 2020 and as much as 490 thousand in 2019) is uncompetitive since the closure of barley imports from Australia. USA (337 thousand in 2020, 403 thousand in 2019) is uncompetitive due to firm barley markets and high rail freight to Mexico.

The burden of supplying the South American, African, Southeast and Far East Asian demand will be upon the EU (2.258 mln tonnes of malt shipped in 2020), UK (143 thousand tonnes), Argentina (448 thousand), Uruguay (372 thousand), Canada (517 thousand) and Australia (628 thousand). The partial loss of 1.0 – 1.2 mln tonnes cannot be fully compensated. Beer consumption will grow, as will the world population; better beer quality (pure malt and craft beer) will need a larger malt input, the analysts said.

New malt factories are being constructed and planned in the EU, UK, Mexico, Brazil, Africa and Southeast Asia, but for the time being malt capacities are insufficient, and markets will be very tight.
